Creative problem solving is a creative way of figuring out a solution to a problem. Have you ever taken a household item and used it for a something completely different use? I know I have use a knife as a screwdriver...sometimes we use what we have available at that given time. How about looking at a problem from a different perspective?
These are ways of thinking creatively in problem solving, its not only about brainstorming or mind mapping. Although mind mapping is one of my favorite ways for processing and doing a swot analysis on a problem to find a common theme, which usually leads to a solution.
There is a creative problem solving process that I recently learned about, well, the term of it technically...the concept, well...I had been implementing in some form or fashion. When you have a 'what if' mindset, you tend to think differently, creatively. This process is called SCAMPER. Yes, it is an acronym to help you remember its meaning. It was first proposed in the 1950's by a man named Alex Osborn and then further developed by Bob Eberle in 1970s. The term, think outside of the box came from this concept.
S: Substitute...what can you substitute in the process of xyz?
C: Combine...How do I blend xy with z? (not invent the wheel)
A: Adapt...What do I adapt or copy with another person or company?
M: Magnify...What do I put more weight on or magnify?
P: Put to other uses...What other uses can xyz...
E: Eliminate...What do I eliminate or make easier in my process?
R: Rearrange...How do I change, revers or reorder xyz?
I'm currently working on a 31 day intuitive painting challenge, each day I dedicate 5 minutes towards this painting process. 31 days is a long time to focus on 1 canvas painting! So, I have to think creatively on how to adapt the painting for that day, whether its turning the canvas, using household tools (Great for discovery) or working on one small area instead of the whole canvas...AND I can't get attached to the design each day, as the next might bring in new insight to make a drastic change.
