Goals, we all have them right? So...lets talk. First of all, I am a conversational writer...so if you want to start critiquing my writing, don't...I will just ignore you. Although, I love sparkles and anything shiny...I don't sugar coat...just say how it is but of course, I do follow the golden rule...if I can't say something nice, I just wont say it. Unfortunately, my face follows the unspoken rule and tends to say it how it is, sorry but not.
So goals...have you heard of the concept of SMART goals? According to Dr Google, SMART goals are defined as " SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. Therefore, a SMART goal incorporates all of these criteria to help focus your efforts and increase the chances of achieving that goal. SMART goals are: Specific: Well defined, clear, and unambiguous."
When I had a team of staff members and went over their SMART goals for the year, I always reminded them that these goals need to be something that they can personally achieve and not be dependent on others...lets face it, not everyone carries their own weight! It would really suck to not achieve a goal because someone else didn't keep up their end of the bargain right?!
When I am coaching my clients I talk about these SMART goals. I want you to think about something that is small and can be accomplished in a short amount of time. It is so much easier to achieve a goal that is smaller and less daunting.
Lets take a look at next week. The holidays are quickly approaching. What is 1 goal that you would like to set for yourself to achieve next week? What steps do you need to take to accomplish this goal? What does this look like? How will it feel once you accomplish this goal, describe it. Write this goal down, the steps needed to accomplish, how it will make you feel and then read it out loud. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the highest, how confident are you that you can achieve this goal? What are some barriers, how can you work around those barriers?
Accountability helps people achieve goals. I mean, lets be real here...how many times have you said I am going to lose 10 pounds by December and that was 5 years ago and now you have gained an additional 10 pounds?! Have someone to talk with about these goals, bouncing ideas around for setting and achieving goals helps raise the percentage of accomplishing it.
I am going to set the goal of getting 3 layers of painting completed on a 3 canvas panel project that I have been putting off. I will put one layer on tonight, another on Thursday and the third on Sunday. It will make me feel accomplished and excited to see the life of the painting becoming real. On a scale I feel I can accomplish this with an 8 because I am battling a head cold right now so it could make me feel like I don't want to do it tonight....but it is only 1 layer and it won't take but maybe 20 minutes at the most, that is a doable task for tonight. Finishing this particular piece of artwork will help me add to my portfolio and it is trying something different so clients can see the flexibility in my artwork and complexity that I can achieve.
